Before answering this question, I would like to 13 Years Of Code Geass 2006 2019 Ichiro Okouchi Thank You Shirt tell that your aim should not be to “get selected for GSoC in the first year”. It does sound cool and awesome ( also probably worth showing off ). However, it ultimately depends on your interest and what project you are working on. So, aim for getting selected for a challenging project rather than getting selected in the first year. The difficulty of the project you work on, is worth way more than the academic year at which you got selected because ultimately people ask about the project you are working on.I remember programming the MINSK II computer (which was on the way out, in 1977) in Octal, using push buttons and the output being shown on the neon digits. The real programs I wrote were on HP2100A and used a simulator for 8080, as a real 8080 microprocessor system was not available! So, ‘cross assembly’ and ‘porting’ were used. I wrote 8080 assembler, editor and debugger and had real fun doing them.

Of course I used IBM360 (compatible) but again using 13 Years Of Code Geass 2006 2019 Ichiro Okouchi Thank You Shirt punched cards non-interactively, while HP 2100A was ‘interactive’ with a real teletype terminal and a paper tape reader. Still have those paper tapes somewhere for the keeps sake. Getting involved in any open source organisation is not necessarily about your coding skills. The more interest you show to learn new things and the way you interact with your fellow developers also shows how capable you are. Also, there are some things which you need to know, stuff like : VCS(git) , writing neat code etc. These are things which require experience more than skill i.e: the more involvement you have with the organisation, these abilities improve automatically with the experience you gain in sending patches etc.
