I didn’t join the ban, but I have wanted it for Save the Sea Turtles T-Shirt years. I want it to prevent needless dearhs on thousands of wildlife…. including sea turtles. Plus the inherent inability of polymers to be truly reyclable has bothered me ance I first learnd about thermosetting and thermosetting plastics. If we had done this decades earlier, we would have already have solutions in place for segments of society that have limted choices for drinking if plastic straws are not available. It’s common for a portrayal of a ‘VSCO’ girl to say ‘save the turtles!’ while they drink out of scrunchi wrapped hydro flasks with metal straws. This is literally just a coined term for further label making. The hair bands, the stickers, the friend ship bracelets, the hydro flasks, the venti cups, they’re all Items™ that make a true VSCO girl have such a label. It wasn’t always that way, but it is now and I don’t see a brighter future any time soon, what, with all the turtles dying.

I try to stay current on which fisheries are Save the Sea Turtles T-Shirt being sustainably managed and which are not. (If enough people do not buy at risk species, there will be less incentive for over-harvesting, and populations will be able to rebound.) Also, there may be unexpected consequences to over-use of one species or another. Example, menhaden have many commercial uses but are also important in the ocean ecosystem. When they are over-fished, deadly algae blooms are more common, predatory fish decline— there is a ripple effect through the ocean. Drops in salmon has led to hunger and a decline in reproduction among some pods of coastal, fish-eating orcas (“killer whales.”) Last summer I went with my father and brothers to the Texas Gulf coast where we used to fish on family vacations. Back then we could reliably catch a meal’s worth of fish for every one to two days’ fishing. Last summer we could not catch a meal’s worth of fish in the entire week we were there. Of two species that we used to eat regularly, we only caught two very small individuals. It was depressing.
